The wedding styling world is full of options … almost too many. I mean, we like to have options but in the wedding industry it often spills over to decision paralysis!
Who knows, you might have a clear vision and know exactly what you want or (like I was as a
bride) you might be faced with so many choices that it just becomes overwhelming. I have been a wedding planner for a long time now and I think I have just about perfected my
winning formula for creating a superbly detailed, beautifully designed wedding day that is unique to you and tells your story:
Your venue is special to you which is why you booked it. It might have breathtaking views, be full of character or hold a special place in your heart for sentimental reasons. You might love a particular feature or it might be a plain, blank space that you can dress to your heart’s desire.
Researching what other couples have done for their weddings is certainly a starting point, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box.
If you can’t decide on a colour scheme ask your venue for help… not their team, the building itself! Wall colours, carpets, décor style - what will compliment it and not argue against it?
Texture and Tone
Balancing textures and tones, not just colour, makes all the difference. Make sure that
combinations you choose don’t drown in cluttered chaos. When it comes to your table, pair plain, smooth white table linen with bold, statement tableware and pretty florals, or team patterned cloths with softer, monochromic arrangements and simple crockery and glassware.
Create a rich tapestry of plant and flowers that vary in shape, size, and feel. A combination of
different flowers and greenery adds dimension to your room.
Visual Harmony
We all want harmony on our wedding day don’t we?!
We also want it throughout our styling. When deciding on a colour for your bridesmaid dresses, your flowers, your table details, consider the entire palette not just one colour. Introducing one or two additional shades can either make your main colour sing or soften. Blend is the key word here. Expand your palette. Orange for example works so well with a hint of peach. Navy and dusky blue are pure magic. Champagne and ivory an be lifted with a splash of lemon or bronze.
Scent and Fragrance
Incorporating fragrance throughout your wedding creates memories through the senses.
Line your aisle with rose petals doused in room fragrance, use scented candles (go for smokeless though) down the centre of your table for that calm, romantic atmosphere; choose flowers that are known for their aromas (gardenias, lilacs and roses); steam your table linen with ironing water; pop diffusers in restrooms; and of course wear your signature scent.
Capture Moments
Choose a photographer who understands your vision so that they capture the most important
details of your day and tell your wedding story exactly how you want it to be told; how it deserves to be documented. Ensure they use lighting and angles in the best possible way to truly create art within your photos, and allow them a level of creative freedom throughout the day to shoot elements they might not have predicted or planned for.
Detail the Day… Every Stage
Wedding days that follow a traditional itinerary follow 5 key stages: Prep, Ceremony, Drinks
Reception, Wedding Breakfast, Party. The morning needs to be relaxing but fun; adrenaline and
nerves are racing and they need to be harnessed. Play some upbeat, happy music; set out attire in an organised fashion (also helpful for your photos) and have a fresh grazing platter to pick from as you get ready. The ceremony is your stage; the moment your guests get to see you both looking at your finest and bursting with love for one another. Personalised seating cards, welcome signs, florals; the little details that remind your loved ones why they’re there; set the scene for what their day holds.
Drinks reception… well cocktails and jazz is all that needs to be said! Or whatever is your vibe.
This is a really special couple of hours of mingling with your friends and family, lapping up their
happiness for you both, and having fun!
The wedding breakfast (called this as it is your first meal as a married couple) is not all about the food and drink, but get it right and the party that follows will see a much fuller dance floor.
Dress your tables to your style and have the food you enjoy, especially dessert, whether its a good ol’ sticky toffee, ice cream sundae or doughnuts - DO YOU!
